"Je Ne Fume que Le Nil / Papier a Cigarettes / Joseph Bardou & Fils"
This very gorgeous and graphically lush Original C 1912 French lithograph advertising poster was made by the late great artist Leonetto Cappiello who produced many of the iconic images that papered the streets of the time. This particular image was made for Le Nil that was a brand of cigarette rolling paper that claimed to be stronger than an elephant. A striking image that has been custom framed in brushed silver that gives it a very contemporary appeal. It is Linen backed on acid-free canvas. Originally purchased from Vintage European Posters in Hawaii. Condition is excellent and has been well loved and cared for.

ABOUT LEONETTO CAPPIELLO
Leonetto Cappiello April 1875 – February 1942 was an Italian and French poster art designer and painter, who mainly lived and worked in Paris. He is now often called 'the father of modern advertising' because of his innovation in poster design. The early advertising poster was characterized by a painterly quality as evidenced by early poster artists Jules Chéret, Alfred Choubrac and Hugo D'Alesi. Cappiello like other young artists worked in a way that was almost the opposite of his predecessors. He was the first poster artist to use bold figures popping out of black backgrounds, a startling contrast to the posters early norm. He is known for modernizing advertising design for the 20th Century. His compositions are uncomplicated and often feature a figure with an oversized rendition of the product against a simple color background. The typography is often minimized to be as direct and short as possible. This innovation allowed for the advertising to be eye-catching and understood at a moments’ glance. It was ideal
for the fast paced travel and attention of busy city life.
He was born in Livorno in Tuscany. He would die in Cannes in France. Cappiello had no formal training in art. The first exhibition of his work was in 1892 when a painting was displayed at the municipal museum in Florence. Some of his paintings are on display
in the Museo Civico Giovanni Fattori in Livorno.
