Item Description

This Original French Art Deco image was created by the artist Chem to promote the Cafes Jeanne D'Arc a family coffee roastery that has been in business for over one hundred years in Orleans. Advertising poster created by the artist Chem in 1934 to promote the Cafés Jeanne d’Arc. Les Cafés Jeanne d’Arc is a roaster founded in 1899 and located at 7 rue de la République in Orléans in the Loiret department and the Centre-Val de Loire region.
In that year Alfred Barthélemy opened a store in Orléans which offered coffee roasted using a patented superheated air system. This store opened on the feast of Joan of Arc, May 8, 1899. The store is still there today and has remained the property of the same Orléans family since its creation. The "Cafés Jeanne d'Arc" is to this day one of the oldest brands in Orléans. Alexandre Chem or Chem (pseudonym of Alexandre Pavlovich Chemetoff) is a French designer of Russian origin. He arrived in France in 1924 and
worked mainly in advertising (Air France from 1933). It is an exubertly designed poster depicting an outstretched hand holding a cup of coffee as well as a Fez hatted head with a long nose. Slightly surreal quality to the drawing as befits the period in which it was distributed. It is Linen backed and custom framed in a black lacquer hi gloss to accentuate colors. It is in very good condition and has been well
loved and cared for. Size Approx 44 H x 32 W
