Item Description

1930-1960 reproduction by the GORHAM Silver company. When Rochambeau was sent to help the Americans defeat Britain in 1781, they were paid in silver from what I understand and the silver was stored in the Forbes house in Hartford CT. My guess is that when Gen. Rochambeau made one of his many visits to the Jabez Bowens, he simply offered Mrs. Bowen one of his many pieces as a "thank you" gesture. Count de Rochambeau was one of the French officers who aided the colonists during the War for Independence. He often joined the Jabez Bowens of Providence when in Rhode Island. On one occasion, he gave Mrs. Bowen a very large spoon from his personal camp silver. Bowen descendants treasured the spoon for many years, and ultimately presented it to the Newport Historical Society as a gift to its permanent collection. The reproductions of this spoon were made by Gorham & Company between 1930 and 1960.
