Painter, draftsman, and sculptor Mark Grotjahn is known for his ongoing investigations of perspective, color, form, and symmetry. In 2001, he began his celebrated “Butterfly” series—geometric paintings and drawings that employ multiple vanishing points to create complex compositions of radiant, tonal color; these pieces evoke 20th-century Futurism, mid-century color field canvases, and the geometric abstractions of Piet Mondrian and Kazimir Malevich. While his early work embraced precise, mathematical lines, Grotjahn’s style has become increasingly expressive. Typically rendered in oil on sheets of cardboard mounted to linen, his later paintings feature aggressively layered streaks of colorful impasto that radiate from an indeterminate center. Grotjahn’s canvases often sell for seven figures at auction.
