Bob Van Allen (1939-1983)
well known designer of home furnishings whose contemporary stylings ranged from fabric patterns to china, flatware and lighting fixtures, died July 23. 1983, of complications resulting from an intestinal infection at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 44 years old and lived in Manhattan. Mr. Van Allen contracted the infection a year ago while traveling in India and China researching designs.
He was born in Pittsburgh. After graduating in 1958 from the Carnegie Tech and Art Institute, he joined the Theater Company of Boston as a set and costume designer. There he met Norman Clifton, the company's producer, and in 1969 the two established the Scuda Corporation.
The company, based in Provincetown, Mass., manufactured batik bags designed by Mr. Van Allen. In 1973 the two left the manufacturing business to free Mr. Van Allen to work only as a designer, and founded Van Allen & Clifton in the SoHo loft where Mr. Van Allen lived. Collection Wins Award
Mr. Van Allen designed patterned fabrics for such manufacturers as Wamsutta and Cohama/Riverdale, paper products for Contempo, lighting fixtures for George Kovacs as well as china for Mikasa and flatware for Stanley Roberts. His collection, called Crayons, for Cohama/Riverdale won him a 1982 Tommy Award from the American Printed Fabrics Council.
The award, named for the ''tommy keys'' used to adjust the pressure of rollers on fabric printing machines, cited Mr. Van Allen's use of a crayon- stroke texture for the colors in six coordinated designs. Similar commonplace and simple concepts characterized Mr. Van Allen's contemporary designs, such as his 1979 Paper Bag collection, which evolved from his doodlings on a paper bag.
He is survived by his parents, Ralph and Martha, and a brother, R. Gordon, all of Pittsburgh
