Item Description

LEATHER BEER JACK MUG Black Brewer's Pitch Lined, Medieval Fair, Renaissance Reenactors, Cosplay, Role Playing

This is a handmade leather reproduction of a medieval "jack", or beer mug, with exquisite attention to detail and beautiful stamped decoration. Sturdy, lightweight and manly, you can enjoy a cold one in medieval style after a hard day's work in this gorgeous pice of workmanship. Quite a conversation piece, and you'll never mix up your drink with anyone else's at your next renaissance keg fest.

This leather mug is waterproof and fully lined. Historically, leather jacks were lined with boiled birch tree resin, beeswax or brewer's pitch. Im not sure what was used here. It is a black, smooth material. I think it is brewer's pitch, however it may even be an epoxy resin.

It is quite sturdy, with no give at all. Very firm. It is both laced together, and there are some coated black nails that secure the base in place.

A jack, (blackjack or bombard), is a drinking vessel made of leather and coated with wax, resin or pitch to keep beer or ale from soaking into the leather. The leather is worked on wet, to shape it easily. When it becomes dry, it is called jack leather. During medieval times, leather vessels became known as jacks. Jacks become popular in England during the medieval and Tudor period.

They had advantages for travelers, soldiers and tavern keepers, easier to keep intact than pottery and glass. They were sturdy and made from plentiful materials and could be repaired easily. For soldiers, an advantage was that they were lightweight, and could be packed and carried easily without breaking.

London alehouses attracted a rough sort of potentially dangerous customers. For proprietors of alehouses, taverns and inns, jacks could be dropped or even thrown by patrons without breaking. If a bar fight broke out, the jacks were less likely to injure other customers.

Notes: I notice one spot where a tiny point of the leather has worn off--the tip of the triangular part where the handle is attached to the vessel. The top left point. Also the black pitch along the mug lip is chipped off in a couple of areas, each about an inch in length.
