This is a truly stunning specimen- a 180+ million year old AMMONITE fossil, with real opal throughout. FRom immense pressure and many millions of years, parts of the ammonite's shell have transitioned to opal. The ammonite is a close relative to the modern nautilus, and resembled a squid with shell. This is a LARGE specimen [used a bill to show scale], quite wide and hefty, with a weight of nearly 12 pounds. It was expertly prepared, so the striations and shape of the shell are on full display. low reserve to partially protect investment.
