Jean-Michel Basquiat's 'King Zulu' features four influential jazz players submerged in a blue space evoking the lyrical sound of blues music. Basquiat positioned the legendary Louis Armstrong in the middle of the canvas alluding to his appearance as King of the Zulus at the 1949 New Orleans Carnival parade. Although exaggerated blackface was part of the parades tradition, placing Armstrong in the centre of the canvas suggests that Basquiat regarded this with some ambivalence.
