Biographical Notes:
Henry Judson Canfield was born on January 21, 1789 to Judson and Mabel Ruggles Canfield. His father was a Yale graduate, Connecticut State Representative, and Federal Judge.
Canfield followed his father's footsteps and attended Yale in 1806. A couple years later, he attended the Litchfield Law School. He was admitted to the Bar in Connecticut.
Henry moved to Canfield, Ohio (named for his father) in Mahoning County, to oversee his father's property. He was admitted to the bar in Warren, Ohio and practiced law. He eventually was elected as Clerk pro tem of the Court of Common Pleas. On April 7, 1825, he married Sally Ferris.
Although he was a practicing lawyer, Canfield became engaged as a farmer. He wrote about animal husbandry and published a book called, "The Breeds Management, Structure and diseases of the Sheep" in 1843. On November 27, 1856, Canfield died of consumption at his home.
