Item Description

This Henriot Quimper black faience oyster plate is a stunning example of the beauty and craftsmanship of Quimper's original creations. The plate features a unique and intricate hand-painted design with vibrant colors over a black base and detailed colorful seashells that are characteristic of Henriot Quimper. The plates are made of high-quality earthenware and have a durable glaze finish that adds to their functionality.

There is also a beautiful serving dish with hand painted "Coquillages" decoration, designed by Guy TREVOUX for the Manufacture HENRIOT QUIMPER.
Decoration of naturalist shells on black background, scalloped shape of the dish, small handles on the sides.
The Henriot earthenware factory in Quimper hired him in October 1951, he worked there until 1954. The decorations of shells on a black background made his reputation.

In the heart of Brittany, France, lies the picturesque town of Quimper, renowned for its centuries-old tradition of crafting exquisite faience pottery.

Quimper pottery has a long history. Tin glazed, hand painted pottery has been made in Quimper, France, since the late seventeenth century. Most of the early pieces are unmarked. The earliest firm, founded in 1685 by Jean Baptiste Bousquet, was known as HB Quimper. Another firm, founded in 1772 by Francois Eloury, was known as Porquier. The third firm, founded by Guillaume Dumaine in 1778, was known as HR or Henriot Quimper. All three firms made similar pottery decorated with designs of Breton peasants and sea and flower motifs. The Eloury( Porquier) and Dumaine (Henriot) firms merged in 1913. Bousquet(HB) merged with the others in 1968. The group was sold to a United States family in 1984. More changes followed, and in 2011 Jean-Pierre Le Goff became the owner and the name was changed to Henriot-Quimper.

The pottery's design reflects a traditional Breton influence. One design, which became typical for Quimper faience, is the "petit breton", a naive representation of Breton man and/or woman in traditional Breton costume. The "petit breton" became popular around 1870 and is still today the main design bought by tourists.
