Henri Rousseau, born on May 21, 1844, in Laval, France, was a self-taught French painter known for his unique and imaginative style. Despite having no formal training in art, Rousseau's works became iconic for their dreamlike and fantastical elements, earning him the nickname "Le Douanier" (the customs officer) due to his former occupation. Rousseau's paintings often featured lush landscapes, exotic flora and fauna, and vivid scenes that blended reality with fantasy. He drew inspiration from botanical gardens, books, and postcards, as he had limited exposure to the exotic locations he depicted. His compositions were meticulously detailed and showcased a rich color palette, evoking a sense of mystery and enchantment.
