"William Ladd Taylor (1854-1926) was an American illustrator. This drawing "Hanging of the Crane" is a 1901 Copley Print by Curtis & Cameron.
"The lights are out, and gone are all the guests
That thronging came with merriment and jests
To celebrate the Hanging of the Crane
In the new house,--into the night are gone;
But still the fire upon the hearth burns on"
"The Hanging of the Crane” is a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, first published in 1874. The poem describes a traditional wedding custom in which a newlywed couple hangs an iron crane, a decorative device used to hold a potholder, in their fireplace as a symbol of their new home and family. The poem is a nostalgic and a romanticized portrayal of a bygone era, evoking a sense of warmth, comfort, and domesticity.
As in this picture, the “Hanging of the Crane” has been used as a symbol of marriage and domesticity in popular culture.
Note on Copley Prints: Until modern times most art was only accessible to those who were able to travel to see collections of art obviously limiting this important part of our culture to very few. In the late 19th century, the print house Curtis & Cameron began to produce prints to help share important works of art and ‘The Copley Prints’ were a specific collection titled after another important early American artist, John Singleton Copley (1738-1815).
