This very beautiful gem of a painting by the late great Hale Johnson depicts a barn elevated on a hill on what appears to be a cool autumn day with an over cast sky of blues and grey.
The field of gold grass in raised impasto plays off against the sky’s ominous tone bringing it warmth and depth. With its intricate and carefully painted detail give it a wonderful
three dimensional effect. Hale Johnson's paintings capture the countryside of Western Massachusetts, coastal Maine and Northwestern England. His work sits comfortably in the tradition of classic American realism and most resembles the art of Eric Sloane, Winslow Homer and Andrew Wyeth. Although his subject matter is the places people live and work you won't see the occupants, only evidence of their lives. It is signed, titled and dated ‘89 on verso bottom right corner. Framed in rustic wood and utterly and charmingly special.
In lovely condition and lovingly cared for. Size Frame 19 L x 11 H x .75 D
Size Image 16 L x 8 H

Of his painting, Hale Johnson says "I paint solitude, but not loneliness." He is known for his still, spare, iconic landscapes of New England, Pennsylvania, and the British Isles.
Johnson is a native of New Jersey, and attended the Newark School of Fine Art and Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania. He lived in rural western Massachusetts for thirty years and painted at his home and studio in the hill town of Colrain, Massachusetts.
An oil painter Johnson reinterprets the American realist style by combining the relics of the past with the present and future.
In choosing subject matter he stretches beyond purely aesthetic scenes to find a location that strikes a certain emotional chord, thereby associating the self with the work of art. His landscapes seem frozen in time yet represent a simultaneous timelessness rooted in the regional history around him. In referring to his landscapes he mentions that he loves the old historic structures because they "set right to the land."
His depictions of architecture and working tools are intended to speak to the human struggle for survival in a challenging climate of New England.
ABOUT PROCESS
Concerned primarily with the history of the land, Hale’s compositions often feature weather beaten barns, boats, and well-used farm equipment. These paintings represent a quiet restrain and delicate sensitivity to detail.
Signature to Johnson’s work was a fascination with texture – particularly that of paint peeling wood and cragged rocks. He smudged, speckled and layered the paint in order to achieve this textural quality, an application process he had developed over the course of his career. Each of Johnson’s paintings balance a precise rendering of surface with areas of loosely brushed strokes. This blending of techniques served to relive the eye from the intensity of his textural detail, providing the relational distances which give the pieces their wonderful feeling of space and depth.
