Frederick Julian Ilsley (American, 1855-1933) Original 1931 Watercolor "Wing And Wing" Signed & Titled

Wonderfully executed watercolor painting by listed artist Frederick Julian Ilsley, who lived and worked in Portland, Maine and Rockport, Massachusetts. This watercolor depicts a sailing scene characteristic of the artist's work, with a sloop faring stormy seas and is signed F.J. Ilsley in red paint in the lower right and dated '31, dating this work to just two years before the artist's death. This piece may have been a study for an oil painting, but it might have been a work in its own right, as it is hand-titled and signed "with compliments of Fred J. Ilsley" on the paper on the back of the frame. Whether it was a study or not, the signature on the painting with the date as well as the title and signature on the verso in the artist's hand tell us it is likely in its original frame.
