Subway Poster promoting in New York City Ntokake Shange’s play for colored girls who have considered suicide / when the rainbow is enuf, which opened in 1976 at the Booth Theatre.
Designed by graphics artist and illustrator Paul Davis.
A young Black woman is shown waiting on a subway platform. Behind her on subway wall tiles, the title of Shange’s play appears in rainbow-colored graffiti next to the imaginary station name, Booth Theatre 222 W. 45th Street.
The poster’s “realness effect” brilliantly complemented its actual function, to be hung on tiled subway walls across New York City.
