Lot #15 of 131
Item Description

An exceptional netsuke of a cooper, by Meiji Period artist KUNIMITSU. The level of detail is amazing, from his tobacco pouch with Okame mask, to the wood graining on the barrel and musculature in his arms. It dates to circa 1890, and is quite large by netsuke standards [the size of a small okimomo]. It has himotoshi/cord holes on his back, and the rubbing in spots is indicative of usage on person as opposed to a carving made for the foreign tourist market [Europeans became fascinated with the netsuke artform in the mid 19th century-early 20th]. This piece was carved by a master, not meant for the tourist trade. It is in excellent condition throughout.
