"Extra, Extra, read all about it!" This oil on canvas painting captures enterprising young men from a bygone era, the newspaper and shoeshine boy. It is signed Après J. Brown. The artist was not J. Brown, but an admirer of hs work. Après translated from the French means "after", as in a copy.
John George Brown, born on November 11, 1831, died February 8, 1913, was a British citizen and an American painter. He specialized in genre scenes of daily life, particularly street children. He often did scenes involving boys selling newspapers, playing cards, and sitting with scruffy little dogs. Brown tried to put the spirit of the street children as people who "pull themselves up by their bootstraps" onto his canvas. He once said "I do not paint poor boys solely because the public likes such pictures and pays me for them, but because I love the boys myself, for I, too, was once a poor lad like them."
