Hakone marquetry was first created 131 years ago during the Koka era by woodworker Ishikawa Nihei of Hatajuku, Hakone, who used the abundant materials and plentiful timber available in the mountains of Hakone. It has gained fame not only in Japan but also overseas, and is now a traditional Japanese art.
Hakone marquetry preserves the natural beauty of the raw wood and combines a variety of different natural colours, grains and textures to create intricate geometric patterns. The resulting thin pieces (like thin strips of wood) are then shaved with a special plane into what is called "zoku", a method of decorating the surface of wooden boxes, bookcases, chests of drawers etc. There is also the method of processing the plain patterned board without cutting it into thin "zuku".
The process of shaving the wood to an even thickness to create a "tsuku" requires meticulous attention to detail and advanced technique, and is a handicraft that requires decades of experience and skill.
