This etch is an Original by Mordi Gassner, dated back to 1958. This sketch says “Homage to Leonardo, studies toward a figure group of adorants”
Homage to Leonardo is also referred to as The Vitruvian Man, a bronze sculpture of Leonardo Da Vinci's drawing of the "Vitruvian Man", the figure whose proportions are inscribed within a square and circle after the Roman architectural theorist Vitruvius.
On the back you’ll find a note to whom he gifted this piece to signed from himself and his wife Augusta.
About the artist-
Mordi Gassner was born in Manhattan, in 1899. He attended the Brooklyn Institute of Arts and Sciences (later Parsons) and the Art Students League, NY. In the 1920s, Gassner went Los Angeles where he worked with Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks on films such as The Thief of Baghdad. Guggenheim Fellowships in 1929 and 1930 allowed Gassner to work in Florence, Italy. After his return to New York in the 1930s he was on the mural division of the WPA. During World War II Gassner designed and illustrated manuals for the Army Signal Corp. In the late 1940s he began a career of stage and costume design that lasted into the 1970s. In the 1950s and into the 60s he taught painting, the history of art, and scenic design and lighting at the New School and the Art Students League.
Condition: Frame has water damage and aging. Wire to hand is broken. Needs to be re- framed.
