This pattern came into use in the years just prior to the First World War and continued right up to 1945. Dress bayonets were private purchase items, purely for wear with a dress uniform, not made for use with a rifle. In Germany, most civil government employees had an evening dress uniform. There were many patterns of dress bayonet. However, the KS 98 was one of the most common among both military and civil service.
