Bio on back:
Twenty-five years after graduating from Miss Porter's, Mariana Cotten made her first return visit to the picture post card town of Farmington. Struck by its timeless beauty and especially the way the school had remained physically unchanged for so many years, she was inspired to attempt to recapture, on canvas, a typical autumn school day in the late 1950's, when she was a student there. Early on in the painting, she realized that no depiction of school life at Farmington, between the years of 1926 and 1966, would be complete without including Officer George Miller, the charming and endlessly patient policeman who stood faithfully in the middle of Main Street for forty years, guiding thousands of girls safely across the street. Second only to the unpardonable sin of crossing without Miller's approval was that of crossing without thanking him. Thus, the three words, "Thank you, Miller," became an integral part of school life, and were uttered countless times each day, as the kindly old gentleman with the twinkling eyes and pink cheeks smiled, nodded and tipped his hat in reply. As the painting progressed, Miller became the focal point. The resulting picture, done largely from memory with help of some old yearbooks, depicts the view from Main's front terrace, across to Lathrop, New Place, Colony and Humphrey, with Miller and his little sign in the center. Ancients from past decades will find small bits of nostalgia tucked here and there; the little building up the hill which houses the old stagecoach; the Gundy, where "Lady" dished up sinful ice cream creations; the riding ring, presided over by the imposing old Russian riding instructor, Boris Wolkonsky, whose wife introduced hot, thirsty riders to the refreshing mixture of iced tea and orange juice after a long, hot riding lesson; Annie, the cheerful, starched-white matron of the dining room; Mr. and Mrs. Keep, who had long since retired from running the school, but still resided in the graceful old house next to Lathrop; and the
Hollis Frenches, who ably directed the school during the artist's years there. The original painting has been donated to the school by the artist in memory of her mother, Shirley Manning Poutiatine, class of 1927. Mrs. Poutiatine, like her daughter, had always held Miller among her very fondest MPS memories. Professionally, Mariana enjoys success as an accomplished artist of works in the primitive style. Her childhood in the gracious old city of Charleston, South Carolina, provided her with a fundamental appreciation for classic architecture. After considerable travel and some interesting jobs, including 5 years managing a hotel in the West Indies with her husband (an experience they describe as though lifted from the pages of Don't Stop the Carnival), they moved to Sarasota, Florida, where they share their charming house with their daughter, two dogs and two cats The prints of the painting are being offered for sale by the school, with half of the proceeds going towards helping to underwrite the cost of the Sesquicentennial Celebration. We hope you enjoy the picture as much as Mariana enjoyed creating it
