A wonderful example of Edward Loyal Field's watercolor work. It depicts a waterfront farmhouse with dock and sailboats on the inlet. He uses restful browns and greys in his palette. You are transported into the calm and serenity of the scene.
Arts and Crafts type oak frame with gold gilding, gold matting.
Edward Loyal Field, 1856-1914, was a versatile artist. An American etcher, watercolorist, and painter in oils. Born in Galesburg, Illinois in 1856. As a young man he went to Paris, to studied at the prestigious Carolus-Duran. In 1882, he ventured back to Manhattan, where he lived for the rest of his life.
Exhibiting extensively in cities across America, he gained notoriety. He was accepted as a member of both the Salmagundi Club of NYC in 1899, and the Boston Art Club. The Salmagundi Club is a professional and social club, created in 1871 by artists and patrons to support one another. One of America’s oldest arts organizations with more than 1,100 current members throughout the United States and abroad, it is located on Fifth Avenue. Here he was awarded the prestigious Inness Prize in 1904, and won the Shaw Prize in 1905.
In the 1890s he was active in the Pakatakan art colony near Arkville, New York, in the heart of the Catskills. Field joined other prestigious artists of the day there, with names like John Francis Murphy, Ada Clifford Murphy, and Alexander Wyant. The Pakatakan colony made strides in the history of American Tonalism, an artistic style of landscape painting forms with overall tones of colored atmosphere or mist. From 1880 to 1915, dark, neutral hues such as grays, browns or blues, often dominated compositions by artists associated with the style.
Field was one of the more accomplished practitioners of the Tonalist aesthetic. He focused on landscapes, glorifying their commonplace features, and frequently included a figure or cottage for bucolic effect. Field also liked to focus light on a clump of trees or a small section of the landscape, giving an element of drama to the scene.
Field died in New York City only months before the outbreak of World War I.
Today Field’s work can be viewed in the Columbus Museum of Art in Ohio, The Butler Museum of American Art, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Holyoke Museum, the Jersey City Museum, and the Nutley Museum of New Jersey.
Notes: The gold metallic mat has noticeable stains, presumably from Windex creeping under the glass, along the left hand side edge and lower edge. This has not affected the actual watercolor. The frame has variations in color, darkening, chipping, and flaking, as expected with its age. The glass has a few, light scratches.
Consistent with age and use.
The oak frame is 35.75 inches by 24 inches, and is 2 inches in width. The opening in the mat exposing the watercolor is 27 inches by 15 inches. "
