The Indian Head Buffalo nickel, also known simply as the Buffalo nickel, holds a special place in American numismatic history and cultural heritage. Introduced in 1913, it was designed by James Earle Fraser, a renowned sculptor and artist who sought to capture the essence of the American West in his artwork.
Design and Symbolism
The obverse (front) of the coin features the profile of a Native American man, believed to be a composite of several Native American chiefs. Fraser aimed to portray a dignified and stoic figure, representing the spirit of the American frontier. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed along the top rim, with the date of minting below the portrait.
On the reverse (back) of the coin is an iconic depiction of an American bison (often referred to as a buffalo) standing on a mound. This design is inspired by Black Diamond, a bison housed in the Central Park Zoo in New York City during Fraser's time. The words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" (Latin for "Out of many, one"), and the denomination "FIVE CENTS" are inscribed around the edges.
Production and Legacy
The Buffalo nickel was minted from 1913 to 1938, with several variations and changes made to the design over its 25-year history. The initial design lacked the denomination on the reverse, leading to wear issues on the coins. In 1913, the denomination "FIVE CENTS" was added to the mound on which the buffalo stands.
Despite being discontinued in favor of the Jefferson nickel starting in 1938, the Buffalo nickel remains highly collectible and cherished by numismatists and collectors alike. Its design and symbolism continue to evoke the spirit of the American West and serve as a nostalgic reminder of a bygone era.
