BIOGRAPHY FROM ASK ART
Anthony Toney, N.A., American (1913-2004)
(painter, muralist, teacher, writer)

A painter, muralist and long-time teacher at the New School of Social Research in New York, Anthony Toney was born to Syrian immigrants in Gloversville, New York on June 28, 1913. He earned a Bachelor's Degree from Syracuse University in 1934. He studied in Paris from 1937 to 1938 at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Grande Chaumiere.

In 1952, he began teaching at the New School in New York City. Three years later, he earned a PhD in fine arts and education from the Columbia University Teachers College. In the 1930s, Toney painted murals for the Works Progress Administration (WPA). Alarmed by the fascist movements sweeping Europe, Toney sneaked across the Pyrenees into Spain and joined the volunteer Abraham Lincoln Brigade fighting against Gen. Francisco Franco's forces in the Spanish Civil War. Wounded at the Battle of Ebro, he returned to New York and worked again for the WPA. During World War II, Mr. Toney served as a flight engineer in the U.S. Army Air Forces in the South Pacific and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Mr. Toney, who took advantage of the GI Bill to get a doctorate in fine arts and education at Columbia University's Teacher College, began teaching at the New School in 1952. He painted two enormous murals at Syracuse University, one of which, Man and the Universe, includes portraits of nearly a hundred scientists and is still on view.

Just before the outbreak of that war, he had his first solo exhibition, which was in New York in 1941 at the Wakefield Gallery. Exhibition venues included ACA Galleries, NY, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Society of Independent Artists, the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, NY, the Penn. Academy of Fine Arts, (PAFA) and the National Academy of Design. He wrote a book, published by Dover Press in 1968 tilted Creative Painting and Drawing.

Toney was a member of the National Academy of Design, an associate in 1969 and full academician in 1971, the Artists Equity Association, the Audubon Artists and the National Society of Mural Painters. Toney's paintings were the recipients of many awards, including the Childe Hassam purchase prize at the National Institute of Arts and Letters, awards from the National Academy of Design, Columbia University, and the Grumbacher Award, Audubon Artists.

Toney's paintings are included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of Modern Art, NY, the National Academy of Design, and Syracuse University, the Norton Museum of Art, the Neuberger Museum of Art, the University of Wyoming Art Museum, and others.
