You asked for the unusual. Here she is. A genuine signed, vintage, avant-garde mannequin legs sculpture by internationally known artist Betty McGeehan.
We have affectionately dubbed her "Crazy Legs". This little number will clearly be the focal point of any room. At 81", ( just under 7 feet tall), she is quite the conversation piece. She exudes upside-down confidence from the tips of her stained 1980's dyed bridesmaid wedding shoes, down to her unrealistically small wasp-like waist. Her legs are swaddled in pastel harlequin hose, complete with runs, holes and some running dye. Are the torn stockings from a boozy night she wants to forget at an underground punk rock or techno night club in the City? You decide. Truly unique and an unusual turn for this artist, whose works currently are moving in a new direction.
The legs are hollow plastic. The base is painted wood. The stocking tights are a harlequin diamond pattern. The shoes are of the Unforgettable Moments dyable fabric wedding shoes line by Lela Rose. Betty McGeehan has signed this piece twice, both on the wooden waist of the mannequin legs, and also on the underside of the yellow and magenta painted wooden base.
Betty McGeehan is an artist who was born in 1934 in Passaic, New Jersey. A self-taught sculptor with a 50+ year career, her mediums range from stone, bronze, aluminum and wood, to found objects. Her works often have a touch of the whimsical about them. Her current series, “Expressions in Wood”, began with her interest in the simple beauty of wood itself.
McGeehan has shown in solo and group exhibitions in the USA and Europe. Her hundreds of works are in the collections of many museums and universities. Private and corporate collections, (for example Sprint, Coca-Cola, AT&T, Toyota, Nabisco Foods) have commissioned her artwork. The recipient of a New Jersey State Council for the Arts Fellowship in 2003, has also received several grants.
Solo exhibitions have been presented at the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, Wilmington, DE and many college and university galleries. Her work has been represented in Grounds for Sculpture, Hamilton, NJ; Zimmerli Art Museum, NJ; Visual Arts Center of NJ; Noyes Museum of Arts, NJ; Sculptors Guild, NY, NY; and the National Sculpture Society, NY, NY.
In 2010, McGeehan’s work was in two movies. Her sculpture has been reviewed in the New York Times and the Philadelphia Inquirer.
