Here's a striking pastel portrait of a young lady dated Dec. 25, 1893. The artist is Thomas Waterman Wood (1823-1903). He signed his works - T.W. Wood as he did on this pastel. The pastel was framed when I got it and the frame and matting didn't show the whole portrait so it is now out of that frame. The condition of the piece is good except for a corner tear on the lower left (see photos) and the light staining from inadequate matting it was in. The photos show both the whole piece, some cropped and a couple with a mat just placed on top of the portrait. The pastel is 22 3/4" by 19". T.W. Wood is an important American artist, below is some biographical information and there is much more online.
"Thomas Waterman Wood (1823-1903) was a highly acclaimed artist who headed both the National Academy of Design and the American Watercolor Society. He was best known for his many portraits and genre paintings. He was one of the first artists to paint African Americans, before and just after the emancipation, not as objects but as people with ordinary lives.
In his later years Wood wanted the people of Montpelier (his birthplace) to have its own art gallery. He donated a number of his works and those of his contemporaries to the museum."
