Debbie Detwiller Smith attended Parsons School of Design in NYC in the 1960s and moved to the Berkshires in 1972. While raising her family, she worked in the arts and in social services and has continued to do so for the last 50+ years. Having painted off and on since college, she enjoys exploring all types of mediums and finds the process of making any work the most satisfying. Color is the key ingredient in her work. Subject matter varies as to whether the painting style is classic, realistic or impressionistic. Sometimes painting over old canvases, using the underpainting to produce something new, is a fun exercise.. she likes to try it all. Using form and space on canvas, strong, vibrant colors, and sometimes exaggerated proportions, she is compelled to make paintings both aesthetically pleasing and thought-provoking. It is gratifying for her to have viewers recognize something that evokes a feeling without saying anything or sparking a memory or inspiration. Member of Guild of Berkshire Artists
