Duccio di Buoninsegna, (born 13th century, Siena, Republic of Siena—died c. 1319, Siena?), one of the greatest Italian painters of the Middle Ages and the founder of the Sienese school. Duccio di Buoninsegna was the most influential Sienese artist. His works include the Rucellai Madonna (1285) for Santa Maria Novella (now in the Uffizi) and the fabled Maestà, his masterpiece, for Siena's cathedral. Both represent landmarks in the history of Italian painting.
