This dramatic hand-colored engraving captures a vivid scene from the Napoleonic Wars, portraying mounted officers and cavalry in a tense moment of strategy amid the chaos of battle. The scene is filled with dynamic movement, detailed military figures, and an ominous sky thick with smoke. Signed "J. A. Atkinson" in the lower left, this piece is attributed to John Augustus Atkinson (1775–1833), an English artist and engraver renowned for his depictions of historical and military subjects. Atkinson's works were celebrated for their accuracy and storytelling, making this engraving a compelling example of 19th-century printmaking.
Notes: Condition: Good overall condition. Slight foxing and mild discoloration consistent with age. Hand-coloring is well-preserved, maintaining its vibrancy. Minor wear on the frame, with small scuffs that do not detract from the presentation.
Consistent with age and use.
