This piece is originally from the home of Francis I. duPont, called Upper Louviers, above the Brandywine River near Wilmington, Delaware. Mr. duPont purchased the property around 1900 from the estate of his cousin, Rear-Admiral Samuel Francis duPont, who built the original house on the site before the Civil War. Francis I. duPont was a third generation descendant of Eleuthere Irenee duPont, the founder of the DuPont Company in 1802. More interested in science and technology than the gunpowder and explosives operations of the company, Francis duPont developed and led the DuPont Experimental Station which invented such iconic products as Nylon, Lycra and Kevlar. He also pursued interests in astronomy and constructed an observatory at Mt. Cuba in nearby Yorklyn, Delaware that is in operation today. We encourage bidders to do their own research into Francis I. duPont, Rear-Admiral Samuel Francis duPont and the Upper Louviers Estate, as all have quite a rich history.
There are multiple pieces that have been passed down from this estate, included in this auction.
William Carpenter lived from 1770 - 1817. He was a well-known watchmaker of his time.
We did test this piece. When the key is used to wind the gears, the gears all move properly.
Consistent with age and use.
