Item Description

Full title: "The Art of Painting by C. A. du Fresnoy: with Remarks: Translated into English, with an Original Preface, Containing a Parallel Between Painting and Poetry by Mr. Dryden and also short account of the most Eminent Painters, both Ancient and Modern by R.G. Esq., The Second Edition, Corrected and Enlarg'd" Published in London (1716) and printed by B. L. and sold by William Taylor at the Ship in Pater-noster-row.

Leather-bound hardcover is fragile. Spine has six bands and gold lettering, detached with some cracks and chips due to aging. Binding is cracked at section "A Short Account of the Most Eminent Painters, both Ancient and Modern by Richard Graham, Esq." though pages are attached to each section. Front and back covers have decorative embossing and are detached. Pages are in very good condition.

Note: Du Fresnoy's book became the standard work on the painting of the French Academy.
