This is a very early example, dating to the cusp between the EDO and MEIJI Periods, circa 1850. The subject is a 'professional sneezer', seated cross-legged and holding a toothpick. It is red lacquer/cinnabar. Artist signed. Similar netsuke [showed several sales] can command incredible sums of money. A professional sneezer is a folk character that would exchange a gift [usually money] for a sneeze, which would give the recipient good luck throughout the day.
