Attention all cat fanciers:
Antique oil on canvas of a cat resting on a pile of straw or hay in a barn (perhaps). It is unsigned and not dated but appears to be 19th century based on the stretcher. It is now in a 20th century frame that is made of wood painted mauve and whitewash.
I believe this is a tabby cat - I think I can make out the ‘M’ on the forehead. If I’m wrong, it’s a tiger cat. It’s the size of a small cat and very lifelike. The artist was not just skilled but must have really understood cats. They have captured the essence of the cat. Look at the eyes. This cat is almost doing a loaf while waiting for the next mouse to cross its path. Whoever decided to paint this cat or commission the painting must have really wanted to honour and immortalise their loyal mouser. 🐾
Frame measures 23 1/2” x 20 3/4”
Canvas measures 20” x 17”
Notes: Please view the numerous, detailed photos for an accurate appraisal of this item's condition. There is a patch on the back of the canvas, due to a former issue in the upper right of the painting, where it was repaired. There is also a mystery swath of off-white/cream paint in the lower right, in the area where you would expect to see a signature. The painting is very old, has some scratches and areas of craquelure. The newer frame has scratches, discoloration and paint loss.
Consistent with age and use.
