Item Description

This is a complete antiquarian leather bound, four volume set of The Tatler - published under the title: The Lucubrations of Isaac Bickerstaff, Esq. Published in 1743 and printed for H. Lintot, et al. Though this set is fragile, the binding and pages are intact. Please see photos for more details on condition.

The original Tatler was published (in folio, three times a week) from April 12, 1709 through January 2, 1711. This complete four volume set contains all 271 issues and has an index in each volume. The Tatler was founded by Richard Steele, who used the nom de plume "Isaac Bickerstaff, Esquire". Steele's idea was to publish the news and gossip heard in London coffeehouses. A major contributor to the Tatler was Joseph Addison (with whom Steele would later found "The Spectator" with).
