Item Description

The painting is of Alfred Bennett Warren. He was born in the 1800s, went to Amherst college and became a merchant. He was the youngest of 10 children. He married and had a child but his wife died young. His death certificate lists his cause of death as "suicide". He is painted as a sensitive, reflective individual. The portrait is an excellent quality of work.
When acquired, the portrait had a typed piece of paper on the back (owner is trying to locate it) that said:
Alfred Bennett Warren
See "The Oval Portrait"

It was signed JW, presumably his grandson who shares those initials.
Could this be a reference to Poe's short story "The Oval Portrait"? Quotes are the correct way to cite a short story. The story is about a man who lost his wife young due to neglect. Both Warren and Poe spent time in Massachusetts. Warren is the last name of the man that took Poe's famous portrait, could they be related? It's all conjecture but it's a fun mystery. A detailed and somber portrait nonetheless.
It measures 16x20”
