The Nakamichi Dragon, produced by Niro Nakamichi and released in Japan in 1982 during the Japanese “Golden Era” of high-fidelity audio equipment, is a masterpiece of a cassette deck. The Dragon is a marvel of engineering, a 3-head deck with direct drive motors and springless, beltless dual capstan transport. The salient technical feature of this device is the Nakamichi Auto Azimuth Correction (NAAC), which corrects azimuth errors in real time using its microprocessor. The sound? Amazing. With NAAC’s power, playback of tapes is perfect, and cassette fanatics around the world agree that the Nakamichi Dragon is one of the best-sounding decks ever produced.
