Item Description

Research shows this pair to be pair to be drypoint etchings by Norwich artist Catherine Maude Nichols (1848 - 1923). The untitled pieces are pencil signed "C.M. Nichols, R.E." in the lower right corner. Professionally framed by H. Antoville, New York. Delicate wood frames and paper in back is discolored from age.
Picture 1 - (Tree Scene) Framed piece measures 13.5" x 11", Art - 7.75" x 4.75"
Picture 2 (House Scene)- Framed piece measures 13.5" x 11", art - 6.75" x 4.25"

Note about the artist: Nicholls was a painter and etcher born on 6 October 1847, Norwich, Norfolk (GRO). Bednar has noted that she exhibited an etching with a Newlyn title, as early as 1880, Pilchard Boats, Newlyn. This is before the bulk of the artists making up the Newlyn colony had arrived. Her major subject matter for paintings and etchings was the countryside around Norwich (rustic scenes), the town itself and also the Norfolk Broads.

Notes: Discoloration consistent with age. Frames are fragile. See photos as part of the condition and description.
