Painting of Peony – Korean – 36”x24.25”
This beautiful painting of orange peonies, very well framed with a silk mat, is most likely from the 19th century from the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), though that has not been confirmed and is considered folk art. As with most Korean folk art, the pieces are not signed. The paintings were made with only kind thoughts and intentions. In Korean culture, where every object in every painting has a meaning, the peony symbolizes wealth, honor and high social status, as well as a symbol of peace. The paintings were originally only used in palaces, but later became more common. If someone did not have a peony painting in their home and were having a special celebration such as a wedding, they would borrow one to hang at the ceremony. The peony is very special and important in the Korean culture and brings only good thoughts and wishes to an occasion.
Consistent with age and use.
