The 90 Abraham Lincoln portrait stamp is the highest denomination in the 1869 pictorial series, generally con sidered the forerunners of our modern commemorative.
The portrait of Lincoln on the 1869 90 stamp is taken from a photograph made by an unknown photographer and is a three-quarter profile framed within an ellipse. This is the second of at least 18 different portrayals of the Great Emancipator to appear on United States stamps from 1866 to the present. In addition, Lincoln's portrait has appeared on dozens of foreign stamp issues over the years.
