Item Description

A rare early-19th century blue and white transfer platter, 14", by John and Richard Riley of Burslem, Staffordshire (1802-1828), in their Europa pattern. The pattern tells the story of Europa, daughter of Agenor, to whom Zeus was attracted. In order to gain access to her, Zeus took the form of a tame bull. Europa found him so gentle that she climbed on his back and he swam with her to Crete. The platter bears the Riley's Semi-China maker's mark.

The platter is in excellent antique condition with crazing, age spotting, etc. Please see pics.

About the Rileys: The brothers John and Richard Riley came from a North Staffordshire farming family and were likely trained as potters in Lane End (Longton) in the late-18th century, beginning in business for themselves circa 1796. They first leased a pottery in Nile Street Burslem, but in 1811 purchased the Hill House estate in Burslem where they rebuilt the manufactory and produced a full range of ceramics. Both brothers died in 1828 and in their business was subsequently sold.
