A particularly large and fine Hardwood Oceanic artifact in very good original condition. Hand-carved and polychrome painted with traditional inset Cowrie Shell Eyes. With wood mounts on the reverse for hanging and having good size and weight.
Collected in Kaminabit, Middle Sepik Region, Papua New Guinea.
The Mei is the ancestral guardian of the junior grade society, but it is used in all ceremonial occasions. It is attached to the Tumbuan, a large basketry dance costume. This particular mask has the iconography of a Zoomorphic Being (combining a human and a bird) signifying the mask's ability to communicate with the spirit world.
Dimensions: 9"W x 5"D x 37"H
Condition: Very good with normal wear attributable to age and presenting exceptionally well.
Consistent with age and use.
