Peter Robert Keil (1942) is a German painter and sculptor.
The Berlin-based artist Peter Robert Keil belongs to the generation of the so-called “Junge Wilde”, a group of young artists who set out in the 1980s to rebel against the intellectualization of art as a result of Minimal and Concept Art. These artists counter the constraints of the intellect with an intuitive, eruptive, “pure” painting, the subjects of which are often devoted to depictions of social milieus, immersing themselves in the Berlin subculture of the time, the punk scene, the hippie movement. All topics are implemented with great intensity, emotionality and emphatic-expressive colourfulness in a relaxed, spontaneous gesture - these are also the specific stylistic features of Peter Robert Keil's art.

Keil's works exude an irrepressible power and emotionality. From the early years until today, his extraordinary sense of color has shaped the artist's creative work. This specific color intensity together with a gestural, direct way of working, which despite dissolving tendencies remains predominantly figurative, leads to neo-expressive echoes, especially in the artist's early work. With this revival of expressive tendencies in painting, Keil's pictorial language can be seen in the context of the so-called 'young wild ones' of the 1980s. The often violently moving style, the deliberate dissolution of the 'real' image into a primitive, rough representation approach ideas of the Cobra group (Asger Jorn, Karel Appel, Corneille) or the 'art brut'. The alienation of the image motifs through collage, text elements, graffiti or other experimental interventions in Keil's work sometimes also suggests the style of Jean-Michel Basquiat.
