As with all of the trim and molding in this auction, this arch and it's pair are made of lower Naugatuck Valley Connecticut Black Walnut, hand selected in the 1840s. The trees were majestic old growth trees 8 -14' in diameter! Sadly trees old growth trees like this are no longer available anywhere at any price. The trees were felled and transported by clipper ship to Spain, where they were milled and carved in great detail over 3 years. The finished product was sent back to Connecticut with the 3 Spanish Master Carvers and their apprentices. These arches with fluted columns framed two sets of bay windows and are the astounding center pieces of this collection. The color of the black walnut is a rich, deep brown with purple hues and highlights.
