"A Raisin in the Sun" is a seminal play written by Lorraine Hansberry. It tells the story of the Younger family, an African-American family living in Chicago's South Side in the 1950s. The play explores themes of race, identity, dreams, and the pursuit of a better life as the family grapples with the challenges and opportunities that arise when they receive a substantial insurance payout following the death of the patriarch. Through vivid characters and powerful dialogue, Hansberry's play offers a poignant reflection on the African-American experience and the quest for dignity and fulfillment in a racially divided society.
Leben Des Galilei -German Edition- (Life Of Galileo, Play By Bertolt Brecht)
Life of Galileo (German: Leben des Galilei), also known as Galileo. Written by the German playwright Bertolt Brecht and collaborator Margarete Steffin with incidental music by Hanns Eisler. It dramatizes the life and struggles of the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei as he faces opposition from the Catholic Church for his revolutionary discoveries regarding the nature of the cosmos. Through Galileo's pursuit of scientific truth and his conflicts with authority, the play explores themes of knowledge, power, and the clash between scientific progress and religious dogma in society. Brecht's work employs his signature style of epic theater, inviting audiences to critically engage with the moral and ethical implications of Galileo's discoveries and the societal structures that seek to suppress them.
The play was written in 1938 and received its first theatrical production (in German) at the Zurich Schauspielhaus, opening on the 9th of September 1943. This production was directed by Leonard Steckel, with set-design by Teo Otto. The cast included Steckel himself (as Galileo), Karl Paryla and Wolfgang Langhoff.
