Stella and son Chris, New Mexico: Santa Clara
The Santa Clara people came from the Puye Cliff Dwellings about 10 miles away from the current Santa Clara Pueblo. The people lived at Puye for approximately 300 years before giving up the cliff dwellings due to a lack of water in 1550AD. Stella Tafoya Chavarria is from Santa Clara Pueblo born in 1939 is the daughter of Teresita Naranjo-Apple Blossom wife of Loretto Chayarria. Stella won her first award (first Place for jar up to 8" tall) at Indian Market in Santa Fe in 1984. She has been making blackware wedding vases, jars, and bowls since 1955. Chris Martinez is a traditional potter from Santa Clara. He learned the traditional art from his grandmother, Flora Naranjo, his mother, Barbara Martinez, and his sister, Vickie Martinez. His pottery tends to be larger than that of most Santa Clara potters these days. Both pieces are magical and mystical, both having an earthy texture for the art form and the world they come from. Collectors dream of originals, these are those we dream of. Signed, and authentic.
