Bound in tan cloth with spider's web, spider and wings on front cover, design attributed to Margaret Armstrong, 464 pp plus 4 pp ads; two each for Peter Ibbetson and Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Ubervilles. Subject of 7 movies and a musical, the inspiration for Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera, and terms as Svengali, "in the altogether", and the Trilby hat. This copy with a darkened spine and ink inscription on ffep. This copy mostly unread. This is the true first, preceeded by a serialization in Harper's Monthly.
