This auction will feature ephemera from an estate between a former governor of Massachusetts, a member of the US Senate, House of Representatives and members of the Judicial courts, a set of letters written by John Davis (January 13, 1787 – April 19, 1854) to Emory Washburn (February 14, 1800 – March 18, 1877). The First Letter offered discusses the nearly last fatal duel in Washington DC because of a dispute on the House of Representatives floor, reported by Davis to Washburn. The acrimony between the North and the South spills out all over Washington DC and around the country. Soon to come will be the Missouri Compromise, The abandonment of the compromise and the Dred Scott decision which propels our nation into the most bloodiest of civil wars. Washburn and Davis were at the heart of this emerging conflict. Other important letters to follow! Also are a collection of floral prints done in the early 1800s all hand colored and fresh to the market. Northshore paintings by a Marblehead artist as well!
