“John Albert Chambers, an ex-sub-chaser man and j. g. lieutenant in the reserve, may be recognized in the accompanying pictures by the busy expression on his face. He comes from Salem, Massachusetts, where they sail boats the day after leaving the cradle; and what he doesn’t know about small-boat handling has yet to be discovered. Chambers, under the direction of George Le Sauvage (the WW1 veteran, Chambers was just out of West Point), friend of all sub-chaser men in the World War, he saved New York from the submarines (Le Sauvage), and after that went across as far as the Azores, and with the conclusion of festivities returned to the West Indies to give the Virgin Islands and Islanders a treat. Three years of service in the S.C.’s endowed him with a roving foot, and now he is happiest when we are under Paul Squibb, second in command (Le Sauvage). (Extract from book: Cruise of the Hippocampus by Alfred Loomis, 1923, The Century Company, NY.”

He also was a part of the Army Air Corps and in 1923, previously under the Army Corp of Engineers, was now stationed and Fort Sam Houston, a typical launch pad for Cuba intervention (the first occurred with Roosevelt and the Rough Riders in 1898 after the explosion of the Maine in Havana harbor). He was promoted from second lieutenant to lieutenant by order of the Senate on July 12, 1923.

His service record in the Official Register of Officers and Cadets by the US Military Academy reads as follows: “6985 John Albert Chambers 26, B-Wis 22 Apr 99: Vet WW1: AC-CE: Resd 26: AUS 42-45 Col: CO 2ADEngrs T-ME; 42-45 (LM-3BSM): Col USAR: Cnsit Acoustica-Engr 306 Orangewood Lane Largo, Fla: Ret Col AUS: CE Cornell 25.”

John Albert Chambers married Susan Arabel in 1914, records show. He later married a woman named Molly. He died in 1971 and served with General George Patton as part of the Sicily campaign in World War 2 as a Lieutenant Colonel and retired from the military as a full Colonel.

Notes: Good, some tears to the jacket with loss of paper, otherwise good. See photos.
