The lady of the lake; a poem’ Scott, Walter, Sir (15 August 1771 – 21 September 1832), Published by J. Gladding & Co, Bristol, R.I., 1836. 232 pgs., 16mo.
Only the second pre-1850 Bristol imprint I have encountered. Gladding "was a zealous Methodist. He carried on the bookbinding business on Bradford St. He issued several other works [besides this one], mostly those of standard British authors" including an edition of the Life and Adventures of Robinson Crusoe. Gladding shortly moved to Philadelphia where he published under the Gladding & Friend imprint. American Imprints 40101; Thompson, Sketches of Old Bristol (1942), p. 160ff.
A rare American edition text block is hold but loose; age toned, light fox; cloth and embossed boards with J. Gladding & Co. on front cover. Board edges binged and worn, front and back boards holding; 155 pages for the poem and to page 232 for extended notes of the canto pages; engraved frontis image of the Lady of the Lake and half title with engraved image of a lyre with Bristol R. I. and 1836 date. This is the classic poem in one of the scarce American editions. Only one copy found. 16mo.
Condition: Spine is lacking with some separation of pages in the front. All pages present. Signed in blank, Florence Teel as well as B. G. Teel, famous military musical bank leader and his wife’s book.
