Item Description

Two small blue and white, creamware open top serving dishes with two side handles. One by Josiah Wedgwood Company signed as: ‘SINGANESE, J. WEDGWOOD.’ Made in the Brownhills, Staffordshire, Wedgwood operation in the 1850s. The second server by Caughley China Works with the uncommon, nearly filled in ‘C’ versus the more commonly seen open ‘quarter moon mark’ from 1775 to 1799 (see page 271, The Practical Book of Chinaware by Harold Donaldson Eberlein and Roger Wearne Ramsdell, Halcyon House, 1942 edition). Caughley China Works was incorporated into Coalport shortly after the death of Thomas Turner. There is no apparent connection between Thomas Turner (1749 – February 1809) and Josiah Wedgwood (12 July 1730 – 3 January 1795). Historically, another family of Turners did work with Josiah Wedgwood and were partners in ventures involving clay and other practices.

There are nicks and abrasions as well as discolorations from food exposure and heat, indicating that these pieces, in their own times were used often at the dinner table. Obviously, the two pieces had been collected by an English porcelain collector, whose family had no interest in table ware and given their present condition, considered the pieces worthless at best. While in truth, the pieces tell an added chapter to the history of English porcelains, that not only were processes often traded, stolen, sold, or lost and transferred to competitors, but also the actual molds, dating nearly 60 or 70 years earlier with the formula for making the pieces (as they both suffered the same fate of exposure to heat and colored, spiced, acidic foods for serving) as well as the exact or nearly exact methods of transfer printing and cobalt colorations using the ghost firing process that produces, lighter colorations of cobalt or other imaging agents!

A paired rarity.
